Question by Tim: How Should a full time college student start to build credit when he cannot get a credit card?
I am 18 years old and just looking to start to build my credit to not be dependent on my parents for things and as an emergency. I applied for one through my credit union, applied through one through capital one and i just applied for a student forward citi card and i got rejected from that as well. I know that it isn’t good to keep applying over and over again. What should i do?

A credit repair business just charges people money they don’t have to do things they can and should do themselves for free.

If you are in the US, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has excellent resources on this subject. Go to http://www.ftc.gov/credit

Q&A: how to start building credit at 17?

Question by quarter horse fan: how to start building credit at 17?
besides a credit card (i know at 17 you can’t get a credit card) how can i start building credit? why i ask, because i’ll be graduating before i turn 18, i want to start building credit now, so i could buy a house during college. i hate the idea of throwing away over ,000 in rent and utilities during college and not even owning the house. besides that the town the college is in has no good apartment but a lot of small cute houses for sale.

*please only real helpful answers.

Q&A: I need to start fixing my credit?

Question by atlantaboi3: I need to start fixing my credit?
I have ignored my credit problems for years. I don’t want that life anymore. I don’t want to be treated like a third rate citizen anymore. I want a house, a new car etc…

I don’t know what the best route is though. It is mostly all credit cards. There are couple other little things. I would 60% of the negative on my credit report is six years old. The rest is about 1 year old.

I know when you pay collections off it drops your score. I am ok with that if it will get better afterwards. Do I pay off all of them? After seven years all negative reports have to removed right?

I have two credit cards that are current and active. I know that will help boost my score too.

What is the best to start to repair your credit? I am overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Thank you!
Also should I try to negotiate with the collection agencies? Do I need everything in writing from them?

Maybe yall know of some good books I could read?

Very intelligent thought process for someone as young as you.

What I did with my daughter was I added her onto my credit card, she got her own card and it went on her credit report. She charged on her card, and when the bill came, she had to pay for her charges.

There’s a suggestion. No, you can’t get your own credit card, because you are not legally responsible for your own debts till you are 18, and nobody is going to give credit to someone that isn’t legally responsible forethe debt.
